What It Takes to Be a Successful Business Owner: A Business Broker’s Perspective

One of my favorite aspects of being a business broker is meeting a variety of small business owners. These owners all have different personalities, backgrounds, types of business and abilities to manage and lead a business. Some have run their business optimally and others have an ailing business either due to external factors or internal forces.

A good small business owner is defined not just by what they sell, but by how they lead, think, and act every day. While no two business owners are the same, the most successful ones share several core characteristics that help their businesses grow and thrive over time.

At the heart of every successful small business is passion. Passion is often what motivates an owner to take the initial risk of starting a business, but it also sustains them through long hours, setbacks, and uncertainty. When owners genuinely believe in what they do, that enthusiasm shows in their products, services, and customer interactions. Passion creates energy, resilience, and a strong emotional connection to the business.

Equally important is the ability to lead a team. Small business owners must inspire and guide their employees, often while working closely alongside them. Strong leadership means setting clear expectations, communicating openly, and fostering a positive workplace culture. When employees feel valued and supported, they are more engaged, productive, and committed to delivering excellent results for customers.

Another critical characteristic is the ability to clearly communicate the business’s unique selling points. Successful owners understand what makes their company different and can confidently articulate that value to customers and clients. Whether it’s superior service, specialized expertise, or a unique product offering, clearly sharing this message helps businesses stand out in competitive markets and build customer loyalty.

A solid understanding of business financials is also essential for long-term success. Good small business owners know how to manage cash flow, control expenses, set pricing, and track profitability. Financial knowledge enables owners to make informed decisions, plan for growth, and avoid common pitfalls that can threaten sustainability.

Finally, great small business owners have a clear vision for their company. They know where they want the business to go and use that vision to guide strategy, decision-making, and growth initiatives. A strong vision keeps the business focused, aligned, and adaptable in an ever-changing marketplace.

I sell privately held companies and family businesses throughout the Pacific Northwest states of Washington & Oregon, along with my experienced, knowledgeable, highly skilled colleagues working out of IBA’s ten offices in the region.  We all LOVE a good entrepreneurial story.  We want to know how you started and made your company into a successful enterprise.  If an exit strategy from entrepreneurship is desired in 2026, we would welcome the opportunity to interview for a position on your transaction team.  All business sales start with conversation.  Please reach out if you are interested in having a conversation about selling your business.  All conversations with IBA are held in strict confidence.

If you have questions relating to the content of this article or the process associated with selling a business in Washington or Oregon, Seth Rudin would welcome the opportunity to talk with you.
